OIFN Visits Modupe Cole Children’s Home In Lagos
OIF Nigeria’s Wheelchair/Walking Aids outreach in Lagos, Nigeria, today entered its Day 7. As OIF Nigeria visited one of the oldest children’s home, the Modupe Cole Memorial Childcare & Treatment Home School, Akoka.
With the support of her partners the Foundation was able to present 19 wheelchairs, 5 clutches, 4 walking sticks, 3 tri-walkers and 1 walking frame, to the delight of the children and the management of the home.
The foundation additionally presented food, clothing and stationary items to the home.
As the event came to a close the atmosphere became estatic as the children, staff and OIF Nigeria team, went into a session of fun and dance.
The principal on behalf of the management and and students expressed their gratitude and appreciation, that their hearts are filled with joy for the wonderful gesture from the foundation and her partners.
But it lot still needs to be desire with the home. A walk through the facility revealed that the home is in dire straight of equipments and general facilities upgrade, to ensure inclusivity and better learning and development for the children.
Overall, it was a successful outing that inspired hope as seen in the eyes of the children.
BRIEF HISTORY:
Modupe Cole Memorial Childcare Treatment Home/School
The home was established in January 1960 at Babatunde Close, Surulere Lagos, by
Mrs E Modupe Cole as a Non-Governmental Organization. It was at the time referred to as Childcare & Treatment Home/School, but after the death of the founder in 1980, the school was renamed as Modupe Cole Memorial Childcare & Treatment Home/School in honour of the founder.
The school was relocated from Surulere to the present site in late 1960, at 1 St. Finbarr’s College Road, Akoka Yaba, Lagos.
The day-to -day running of the school between 1960-1976 was mainly private. Through Mrs E Modupe Cole funding in conjunction with Women Voluntary Organization that assisted with finance and other inputs such as staff and materials.
Currently, Modupe Cole is the only special school owned and controlled by Lagos State Government that has accommodation facilities. And attract, admits children from almost all the state of the federation with various disabilities.
Since 1976 till date the school has been under the control and supervision of Lagos State Ministry of Education.
The school also caters for abandoned children and a free-fee paying school.
